An extremely specific and yet totally ordinary contradictory combination of traits, I, like everyone, has found life a messy mixture of comedy and tragedy, joy, misery, love and heart aching loss. The only inevitable discovery that gives me any kind of warm sense of understanding is to know that I offer nothing more than the senseless confusion with it all; so I will make the best of it. For me, that’s filling my time with creativity.
Based in Los Angeles, described well by Nelson Algren as ‘a Jekyll and Hyde sort of burg’ - the horrible and yet sunnily wonderful sprawl of concrete became home 15 years ago when my wife, two dogs and few boxes arrived from Melbourne, Australia to pursue one of those creative dreams; to work in movies. I have spent this time proudly as a Supervising Animator at DreamWorks, working on some of the biggest blockbuster animated films including How to Train Your Dragon, Kung Fu Panda and most recently, The Wild Robot.
But, like anyone bitten by a creative bug, the need to make things, be it for the big screen or just for yourself, does not clock off after work hours. A lot of life happens after 6pm. So I wander and look with curiosity and try to attempt to capture something that inspires, challenges or teaches me through photography. If nothing else, it gets me outside.
I shoot a mixture of digital and increasingly more, film. I love a number of cameras including Leica M, Hasselblad XPAN and medium format 503cw. My chemistry and science teaching wife mixes the chemicals with a minor level of enthusiasm (I love her) and all the film is developed at home where it is then scanned or printed in the darkroom. Like animation, the joy for me is in the process. AI can go to hell.
